At Dinnington First School, we believe that Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education is a vital part of every child’s learning journey. It helps our pupils develop the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to navigate the world around them, build positive relationships, and take care of their physical and emotional wellbeing.
We follow a comprehensive, whole-school PSHE programme that is carefully planned in line with national guidance from the PSHE Association. It includes statutory Relationships and Health Education, and covers key areas such as health and wellbeing, relationships, and living in the wider world. We also deliver the No Outsiders programme to promote inclusion and celebrate diversity, supporting our commitment to the Equalities Act 2010.
PSHE is embedded throughout the Early Years curriculum and taught explicitly in weekly lessons in Key Stages 1 and 2. It is also meaningfully woven into other areas of the curriculum such as Science, Computing, and topic work. Lessons are delivered by class teachers and support staff who know the children well, ensuring that pupils can explore important topics in a safe, supportive and age-appropriate way.
As part of our commitment to wellbeing and oracy, we run weekly restorative groups where children from all year groups meet in small circles with a member of staff. These sessions provide a calm and structured space for pupils to check in, share thoughts, and practise speaking and listening skills. They help build trust, empathy, and a sense of belonging across the school community.
Our school values—resilience, openness, community spirit, kindness and success—are at the heart of our PSHE and RSE curriculum. They guide how we support children to become thoughtful, respectful and emotionally aware individuals, ready for the next stage of their education and life beyond the classroom.
PSHE Association Curriculum
Our curriculum is built upon the guidance provided by the PSHE Association, ensuring that our students receive a comprehensive education that covers key topics such as health and wellbeing, relationships, living in the wider world, and personal finance. We adapt the curriculum to meet the specific needs and developmental stages of our students, providing a relevant and meaningful learning experience. In addition to this, Dinnington First School delivers the No Outsiders programme to ensure we are a fully inclusive school that supports the Equalities Act 2010.
PSHE lessons are timetabled for every year group for one lesson per week. This is planned, resourced and delivered by class teachers.
